NOISE-CONTROLLING IT, AND USING IT AS A TOOL

Through systematic analyses of machinery-produced sound, Battelle researchers can identify exact noise sources and determine effective noise-control tehcniques. Also, they can predict how changes in an enclosed space's acoustic characteristics will influence the acoustical environment of that space and its occupants. Other acoustics research concerns the use of acoustic energy in industrial tasks ranging from nondestructive testing to welding plastics. Mathematical models of noise-related problems are used to analyze the acoustic properties of automobile passenger compartments. And from models that represent an urban neighborhood, its roadways, and its traffic, researchers are evaluating in the effectiveness of proposed noise-control regulations. /Author/
