Federal Management: Challenges Facing the Department of Transportation. Testimony

This testimony discusses the critical management challenges facing the Department of Transportation (DOT). The testimony is based on a report the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) issued in January, 1999 as part of GAO'S performance and accountability series on major management challenges and program risks facing the federal government. With a budget request of over $50.5 billion for fiscal year 2000, the Department faces critical challenges in achieving its goals of ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods and in making cost-effective investments in the nation's transportation infrastructure. Transportation modes covered include aviation, highways, public transit, railroads, and water transportation.
