BITUMINOUS MIXTURES CONTAINING EMULSIONS: STUDY OF WATER LOSS WITH THE GYRATORY SHEAR PRESS

The study described was conducted on experimental construction sites where bituminous mixtures containing emulsions were being used. During laying, water bleeding and cushioning occurred limiting the state of compaction to relatively low values. Because of the harmful consequences of this phenomenon, water bleeding was studied by means of a method using the prototype gyratory shear press developed at the regional laboratory in angers. Investigations were carried out on different emulsions with different gradings; they show how difficult, if not impossible, it was to extract water from a sample other than by extrusion and that the most probable assumption to take into account during compaction on site is that the total amount of water is present. /TRRL/
