THE CAUSES OF DEFORMATIONS OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR THEIR AVOIDANCE

Extraordinary deformations of bituminous pavements caused by high summer temperatures require alterations of the current regulations TV bit 3/72 as amended July 1975. The function of the various constituents of the bituminous mixture in relation to stability are discussed. The occurrence of damage caused by studded tyres led to the demand for greater durability and the consequent neglect of strength and rigidity in the drafting of TV bit 3/72. After the stud damage came the heat damage which led to requirements of lower binder content and harder grades of bitumen. This however is not sufficient to achieve the rigidity in pavements as was obtained when using the provisions of the regulations TV bit 3/64. The following amendments to TV bit 3/72 and tvt are suggested: reduction of the minimum bitumen content to the minimum required for coating and cementing of the mineral grains, increase of the minimum chipping content in the case of binding and wearing courses, increasing the proportion of larger particle sizes in well graded mineral aggregates, resulting therefrom an increase in the minimum permissible voids content, in order to permit the harmless thermal expansion of the bitumen and to preserve the internal friction in the mineral skeleton even during the hot season. /TRRL/
