DISCUSSIONS ON THE APPLICABILITY OF TV BIT 3 TO FOOTWAYS AND CYCLE TRACKS

UEBERLEGUNGEN ZUR ANWENDBARKEIT DER TV BIT 3 AUF GEH- UND RADWEGE

The author considers whether the use of a pavement for cycle tracks or footways constructed in hot bituminous mixture in accordance with TV bit 3/72 can achieve the required compaction values. The conditions present in highway construction (stable subgrade, large course thickness, construction with the aid of heavy rollers at high temperatures), all of which help to achieve a high degree of compaction, are not present in the case of cycle tracks and footways. Methods of overcoming compaction difficulties by the use of mixtures particularly suited to compaction (rolled asphalt with few chippings 0/5) suffers from the disadvantage of lower stability and the necessity for supply of additional mixing material. It is proposed that the regulations for rural road construction TV-VW75 should be waived and that the degree of compaction should be linked to the voids content instead.
