DYNAMIC CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK IN UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES

It is proved that the analytical calculation of stresses and deformations in a cavity is only possible in the elastic region; in all other cases it is impossible. The introduction of a stress or deformation measuring device sets off an immediate weakening of the rock, so that from then on it is possible to measure the changing conditions in a cavity, but not those in unbroken rock. For these reasons, only phenomenological measuring and calculating procedures lead to the determination of durability, stability and classification of the properties of the rock. One such procedure is proposed - a combination of laboratory studies on hollow cylindrical rock samples taken from the rock types expected around the underground road, and tested for shearing and compression when subjected to variable deformation rates and variable sideways pressures. These studies provide data on loss of strength in relation to the deformation rate, and on strength in relation to the lateral pressure of the rock. /TRRL/
