ELIMINATION OF TRACKING IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS WITH THE ASPHALT SURFACE REGENERATION TRAIN

In eliminating tracking in bituminous pavements it is economic to repair the surface material on site with high quality processes. The assumptions for this are discussed. The process differs from the well-known repave process in that the change from the old wearing surface to the new thin wearing course is carried out in two separate actions, which is advantageous. The utilization of the surface material is possible if the damage is exclusively from wear, if the deformation is uniform over the whole bituminous surface or if it depends upon the subsequent compaction of the individual layers. Utilization is not possible if humps have been formed and the material is not sound. The actual regeneration equipment consists of a normal commercial finisher with superimposed heating batteries for temperatures of up to 200 deg C, a ripper, a blade distributor and a vibrating screed. A second normal finisher lays the additional thin wearing course with new material. The working speed of the regeneration train is up to 5 metres per minute dependent upon the performance of the heating equipment. /TRRL/
