FURTHER EXPERIENCE WITH THE REPAVE PROCESS

WEITERE ERFAHRUNGEN MIT DEM REPAVE-VERFAHREN

On two stretches of A3 Motorway Cologne-Frankfurt-Wurzburg the repave process was used for the repair of bituminous pavements which had deformed due to extreme summer temperatures. The process was selected because it allowed uninterrupted progress on the heavily trafficked roads with a daily movement of sites, because it had financial advantages over other processes and because the stretches were to be renewed from the sub-base upwards within the foreseeable future. The wearing course consisted of gussasphalt 0/11 mm. A special machine was introduced which carried out the entire preparatory works. This machine possessed two scarifying rakes with widely spaced tines and between them heating elements, which were of decisive significance in the successful handling of the gussasphalt surfacing. The necessary supplementary mix material consisted of rolled asphalt 0/8 mm at a rate of 35-37 kg/sq M. It should be noted that the repave process is more difficult in application to gussasphalt than to rolled asphalt. Information is provided on the execution of the process and on the contractual arrangements. /TRRL/
