INVESTIGATIONS INTO THERMOPLASTIC COMPOUNDED BITUMEN. PART 2

UNTERSUCHUNGEN AN THERMOPLASTCOMPOUNDIERTEN BITUMEN. TEIL 2

The admixed thermoplastic creates a change in the properties of the initial bitumen. From this it can be shown that the admixture can cause different, to some extent contradictory property characteristics. Usually the plasticity margin is raised. Furthermore, construction qualities appear to be improved from which it may be inferred that by the admixture of different plastics improvements may be made within the asphalt mix. The investigation indicates undoubted correlation between results from the different methods of testing. This is particularly noticeable in the comparison of the ductility of extension in the axial elongation test and of the impact number. There is also a connection between the qualities of a bitumen-plastic mixture and its structure as seen under the microscope. The solubility of the admixed thermoplastic in the bitumen corresponds fundamentally to the resulting properties of the mixture. A further investigation into the relation between the structure-characteristics and a clarification of the reasons for the evolved properties through the addition of thermoplastics would facilitate an objective comparison with previously determined characteristics. /TRRL/
