THE PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION OF INNER CITY ELEVATED ROADS

BETRACHTUNGEN UEBER DIE PLANUNG UND DEN AU INNERSTAEDTISCHER HOCHSTRASSEN

The author indicates certain points which have to be considered in the choice of system and method of construction for urban elevated roads. Various cross-sectional designs are discussed. Particular reference is made to the use of precast elements and the associated problems. Suitable precast sections are those which act as a formwork and which can be made resistant to shear and tension forces by means of cast in situ concrete or glue (segmental method of construction). Problems of carriageway drainage, which arise because of the almost horizontal gradients, are discussed. In inner city areas great importance is attached to the design of noise protection measures and guidance equipment for protecting both road users and people in the vicinity of the road. With respect to this equipment it must be remembered that there is only limited space available and that therefore a combination of guidance systems and noise walls is desirable. Brief reference is made to problems of the architectural design of bridge structures. /TRRL/
