MINERALOGICAL ANALYSIS OF HARDENED CONCRETE

ANALYSE MINERALOGIQUE DES BETONS DURCIS

After giving details of the terminology and historical background o the subject at the LCPC, the author critically analyzes the different methods of measuring the proportioning cement in hardened concrete and states that, apart from some rare exceptions, this proportioning is based on the use of soluble silica. A more sophisticated method is described, which is based on the complete analysis of a filtrate resulting from etching with very dilute hydrochloric acid, the principal interest of which is to provide data on the history of the concrete analyzed. The use of a computer with adequate programming eliminates long and tedious calculations to determine the quantitative mineralogical composition of hardened concrete. /TRRL/
