Decisions on the economics and safety of underground structures depend basically on accurate forecasting of rock quality classes. Because of the number of factors which influence rock pressure and the ratio between stability and time, there are basic problems with analytical design in advance. The reliability of the forecasts of rock quality classes can be checked by means of model tests in situ. The model law for durability and for similarity of forces is derived, and an indication given of observations which should be undertaken in the laboratory and in situ. The relation between the forces in the model and the forces in the full-scale structure is proportional to the relation between the linear dimensions of the model and the full scale structure, and dependent on existing deformation rates. Durability is proportional to relaxation time. /TRRL/
