STUDY OF TUNNEL LIGHTING AS A BASIS FOR DRAWING UP CONSTRUCTION RECOMMENDATIONS

UNTERSUCHUNG DER TUNNELBELEUCHTUNG ALS GRUNDLAGE FUER DIE ERSTELLUNG VON AUSFUEHRUNGSRICHTLINIEN

Foreign recommendations currently used in Austria differ considerably from one another, and were not produced with the present-day emphasis on economics. The object of the work described was to determine relations between parameters valid for tunnel lighting starting from general principles associated with the physiology of vision. Formulae and diagrams are presented for the individual technical stages of lighting, by means of which the required minimum luminances and their boundary conditions such as longitudinal uniformity, reflection etc can be determined for factors such as speed, external luminance etc. Various conventional lighting installations are compared and evaluated. One section deals with the effects of tunnel and lighting on the driver from the neurological point of view. In particular the effects of monotony, flicker and claustrophobia are discussed. /TRRL/
