USED GLASS AS AN AGGREGATE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ROLLED ASPHALT

ALTGLAS ALS ZUSCHLAFSTOFF FUER DIE HERSTELLUNG VON ASPHALTBETON

The use of broken glass in bituminous pavement construction is not recommended because of the material properties of the glass itself and the poor adhesion between the bitumen and the glass. Considered from the economical viewpoint, the use of broken glass itself is not feasible, as the present price per ton of used glass in the trade is 66 marks. The high price of used glass is based on the official government price for bottles and glasses. The further increases in prices arising from breakage and transport costs means that the price for prepared broken glass will be at least as high as that of stone aggregate. Only when it becomes possible to improve the adhesion of bitumen to glass by means of adhesives developed in the future and when the price per ton of broken glass is reduced, would it appear possible to apply this material in bituminous road construction. /TRRL/
