FROM BUS TO BUS-TRANSPORT SYSTEM. DEVELOPMENT TRENDS OF BUS TRANSPORT IN THE FUTURE

VOM OMNIBUS ZUM OMNIBUS-VERKEHRSSYSTEM. ENTWICKLUNGSTENDENZEN DES OMNIBUSVERKEHRS DER ZUKUNFT

The paper deals with improvements in bus transport if it is conceived as a transport system and previous isolated treatments of vehicle, road and operation are disregarded in favor of coordinated development as a transport system. A staged concept is presented mainly based on separate bus lanes in the inner city, improved operation systems, improved facilities for passenger comfort and the use of environmentally acceptable alternative types of engine. As a partial medium-term solution a separate running level for buses is proposed. Using automatic lane direction, which considerably reduces the width requirement of bus lanes, cost reductions are achieved utilising purpose-made structures. Often, separate bus lanes can be only produced in this way. In the long term a system using standardized units for public transport vehicles in bus technology could make use of the advantages of large scale mass production for the whole public transport system. The step by step concept described for a bus transport system can be financed in short controlled stages as opposed to other current systems.
