CAN SURFACE CAR PARK CAPACITIES AND MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK CAPACITIES IN A CITY BE USED TO OPTIMUM? EXAMPLES FROM HANOVER

The paper deals with investigations into the number of occupants of private cars recorded at entrances to public multi-storey car parks in central Hanover and at entrances to a large surface car park on the edge of the city centre. From the results, frequency distributions were derived which are summarised for the following characteristics: Degree of occupation by private cars in multi-storey car parks on Fridays and Saturdays and the degree of occupation by private cars in a large surface car park on Saturdays. From this the following average values for degree of occupation were obtained using the same order: 1.98 persons per car, 2.20 persons per car and 2.59 persons per car. Using mathematical-statistical computation methods it is established that considerable differences between days of the week on the one hand, and parking places on the other, are present in the 'degree of occupation' values. Following an evaluation of the theoretical distribution functions a proposal is discussed for improved usage of available parking capacity. /TRRL/
