The Preparation of Railroad Traffic Data Bases

This paper describes how the creation and maintenance of a useful and reliable rail traffic database provides a wealth of information about the patterns and composition of railroad traffic. The validation and editing process can pinpoint deficiencies in the original revenue accounting procedures which prepare the waybills. Information gathered from the traffic database can readily be extracted and summarized for users both within and outside the railroad. Most importantly, the traffic database is the key input to any detailed planning or evaluation exercises which may be desired.
