VINTAGE YEAR FOR EVS

For electric-vehicle proponents, 1978 will go down in history as a milestone in their long uphill race against the gasoline-fueled internal-combustion engine. This was the year that General Motors Corp. announced its intention to market production electric vehicles in the mid-1980s. The news from GM gave EV supporters the credibility they have been seeking for years. The implementation of Public Law 94-413 (the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development, and Demonstration Act of 1976) is well underway. The Dept. of Energy (DOE), which was given the responsibility for administering the Act, has awarded the major R&D contracts to several government organizations: Vehicle systems R&D -- Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Propulsion system R&D -- Lewis Research Center. Battery R&D -- Argonne National Laboratory. Flywheel R&D -- Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.
