COURSE STABILITY OF CYCLISTS AND MOPED RIDERS

KOERS HOUDEN DOOR FIETSERS EN BROMFIETSERS

Cyclists and moped riders not able to follow their normal path may come into conflict with other road users. The Institute for Road Safety Research (SWOV) commissioned the Institute for Perception TNO to carry out a study concerning stability and manoeuvrability characteristics of single track vehicles. In driving tests different routes were followed. In addition to knowledge from the literature the results of the study have practical consequences for the design of traffic provisions, bicycles and mopeds, traffic and behaviour rules. The necessary width for cycle tracks under different circumstances and the manoeuvrability of two-wheelers are discussed. Further aspects considered are: riding using one hand, carrying passengers, the traffic situation and the effect of road surface unevenness and side wind disturbance. /TRRL/
