Intelligent Transport Systems

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) can increase the efficiency and safety of surface transportation system management through the use of technology while providing real-time information to travelers. This bulletin presents brief articles that provide an overview of ITS. The first section highlights what is meant by ITS and the vital role ITS is playing in major transportation policy objectives such as road safety, traffic congestion and reduced emissions. One area in which ITS is being applied is toll collection. The second section of this bulletin presents 3 articles that highlight how intelligent tolling is being applied in Austria, Slovenia and India. Successful ITS applications, including highway concessions, cooperative vehicle highways systems, road charging schemes, fare collection, and variable message signs, are highlighted in the third section. Finally, the future of intelligent transportation systems, including satellite-base road management and using ITS as an alternate to road widening is discussed.
