PREDICTION OF VEHICLE SWEPT PATHS

In the author's opinion study into the geometric characteristics of the area swept by standard vehicle configurations has been somewhat neglected. To date published work has been generally limited to defining the carriageway areas swept by vehicles undertaking single radius turns of 90 deg or 180 deg. However, this falls short of providing a comprehensive design tool to meet present-day requirements of junction design. This paper attempts to develop a comprehensive method of construction to enable the swept path of both rigid and articulated vehicles to be predicted through any series of turns to check the adequacy of the carriageway allocation and location of traffic islands. /TRRL/
