Thoughts on the Potential Impact of Energy on 21st Century Transportation Planning: [Part 2]

This is part two of an article on the potential impacts of energy constraints on transportation planning in the 21st Century. The article presents a review of alternative fuels and how they may affect transportation planning in the near term. The author discusses ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, natural gas, propane, and fuel cell hydrogen. Also described are alternative vehicles including plug-in hybrids, electric, scooters, and the Segway. The author provides pros and cons of the various fuels and vehicles in terms of their environmental impact. Among his predictions: the refueling network will change and diversify, cars will downsize but trucks will not, the vehicle mix will change, public transportation will attract a growing share of the commuting market, and highway systems may separate cars and trucks for safety reasons.
