Ready to Roll

China plans to have an eight high-speed rail line network totaling 10,000 km by 2020. On the massive Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail project, estimated to cost US$32 billion, construction is now in full swing. Design of the new line aims, during peak hours, for three minute headways with a 350 km/h maximum speed. About 80% of the line will be on bridges or viaducts to keep noise to a minimum and avoid occupying too much land. An insert describes slab track switch developed by Germany's Max Bogl.
