Current and Future Trends in Long-Span Bridge Design in China

In this paper, current and future trends in long-span bridge design in China are introduced with an emphasis on recent long-span bridge projects, bridge deck configuration, and material, design codification of long-span bridges and improvement of aerodynamic performance. Recent long-span bridge projects include 36 completed suspension, cable-stayed, and arch bridges with a main span of over 400m, and 10 major bridges under construction. The bridge deck configuration and material are then presented with prestressed concrete decks, steel-concrete composite decks, and steel box decks together with several popular cross sections. In the 3rd part of this paper, 4 design specifications, including static and dynamic design for highway long-span bridges, are briefly outlined. Recent engineering experience gained from several aerodynamic vibration control projects of long-span bridges is also outlined in the last section.
