Brown Water Operations: Ensuring that the Western Rivers Remain Open

There are unique navigational challenges on the Western Rivers, which are, essentially, a network of channels. In addition to locks, dams, and bridges, river channels are always shifting. The entire Western Rivers system bears a significant economic impact when even a single tow experiences unintentional grounding, collision, or allision. The authors discuss western-style salvage and lightering, incident recovery, and a case in point, all in the interest of keeping the river system open.
