Route Guidance System Based on OSPF Protocol

The aim of this paper is to propose a framework of route guidance system (RGS) based on the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol, a widely used Internet routing protocol. RGS based on OSPF is composed of 2 parts: traffic network and guidance data network. The guidance-data network includes intersection guidance equipment (IGE) with wireless access units (WAU) and data links between IGEs. Each IGE calculates the shortest paths to every other intersection according to real-time link information exchanged between IGEs through flooding processes. A vehicle can acquire route guidance from the nearest IGE found by in-vehicle guidance unit by communicating with WAU through the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN protocol. Results indicate that the proposed system has the characteristics of rapid convergence, high reliability, good expandability, and relatively low cost. This paper provides a new insight into the research of traffic RGSs.
