Commodity Movement Data: An Assessment of Sources and Coverage with Emphasis on the Commodity Transportation Survey

The objectives of this paper are threefold. First, to review and briefly assess the coverage of major non-census data sources on the intercity or non-local transportation of commodities in the United States (U.S.). Second, to describe and more completely asses the commodity flow surveys of the U.S. Census Bureau in terms of their coverage and stated objectives of “filling the data gaps” . Third, to describe one of several Department of Transportation-Transportation Systems Center (DOT-TSC) projects which are presently underway that attempt to improve upon, standardize and utilize existing machine readable micro-data. The project described relates to the development of the three-year (1963, 1967 and 1972) corrected and standardize TSC data base, on line, complete with a software system for ready access.
