In the United Kingdom, noise from construction and demolition work has been recognized as a potentially serious environmental disturbance to people living or working close to the site. The Control of Pollution Act has attempted to deal with such problems by providing new powers to control the emission of noise. At the Transport and Road Research Laboratory a research study has been carried out on road construction noise with the objective of providing technical support to local authorities and highway engineers to implement effectively the relevant powers given in the Control of Pollution Act. This paper describes some results of this work.
