FACTORS IN THE VARIABILITY OF AUTOMOTIVE SOUND LEVEL MEASUREMENTS

Large-scale measurements of the exterior sound levels of automotive vehicles began about a decade ago, although certainly such measurements have been made as long as sound instrumentation has been available. Exterior sound levels are determined following prescribed test procedures for vehicle development purposes and for determination of compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. With increasing experience in making these measurements, it has become apparent that there are systematic and random influences on their accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility. This paper categorizes and discusses those factors which influence the variability of automative sound level measurements.
