The Effectiveness of Incident Management on Network Reliability

This study reviewed literature about software, systems and techniques used to respond to traffic incidents and manage traffic congestion. Microsimulations modeling incident detection and management in urban areas were also explored. The report provides a summary of the findings of this preliminary research, conducted in New Zealand in 2006-2007. The research examined the ability of intelligent transportations systems (ITS) used to detect and manage serious traffic incidents, and to ascertain which traffic control strategy to use when incidents are detected. Some ITS treatments covered include variable message signs and adaptive signal control.
