ATOMS: Air Traffic Operations and Management Simulator

This paper provides a description of a simulation and modeling system for airspace and air traffic in systems such as air traffic management (ATM) and airborne separation assurance (ASA) called the Air Traffic Operations and Management Simulator (ATOMS). ATOMS, an intent-based simulation device, is presented from the perspectives of functionality, design, applications, and architecture. ATOMS is a free flight concept prototype for ATM and ASA as well as cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI), weather avoidance, and decision support systems (DSSs). The system implements multiagent-based modeling paradigms that allow for a modular design of subsystems. Authors note that free flight concepts must be analyzed in concert in order to determine the stability of the system as a whole. It was determined that ATOMS makes such an analysis possible through the modularity of its subsystems.
