KEYNOTE ADDRESS OF THE BRIDGE ENGINEERING CONFERENCE

Applied research is here defined as looking for "better way" for a specific situation. The speaker's experience with projects involving outside experts indicates to him that it is not enough to know how to look for solutions to problems; one should know what to look for, that is, the people who have the problems are the ones who should do the applied research on them. This suggests that all professionals in the field should be involved in the process of looking for better ways to do their job. It also suggests that the people who have the problems should be directly involved in the specifications and management of pertinent applied research projects.
