Best of both worlds

The Mersey's new bridge will be about more than just getting from A to B - it has to consider the sensitive environment it is crossing. The Mersey Gateway will be a 900-metre toll bridge running between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes, which sit at opposite sides of the river. The project has been set up to help ease congestion on the river's existing crossing, the Silver Jubilee. The article describes the structure of the bridge which is hoped will disturb the river as little as possible, reducing the impact on nearby salt marshes and protecting habitats and ecological stability.
