The HVS-Nordic ALT machine - an Example of trans-nationally used testing equipment

In 1997 Finland and Sweden jointly invested in a Heavy Vehicle Simulator, HVS, manufactured in South Africa. The HVS is the only movable heavy vehicle simulator in Europe. A program for research cooperation in the area of accelerated road testing was agreed between Finland and Sweden covering the years 1997-2003. Today the machine is owned by VTI with an agreement for cooperation with Finland. VTI considers the HVS-machine to be an European test facility. It is available for tests by industry and for use by researchers in other countries than Sweden. We have experience from carrying out tests for clients like for example the Swedish Road Administration, the Swedish construction company NCC (in cooperation with Strabag), the Swedish construction company Vaegverket Produktion, the Danish Road Directorate, the Public Road Administration on Iceland and a European research project. As the heavy vehicle simulator is a movable equipment it is especially suitable for use by researchers or clients in other countries. Expensive equipment can normally not be financed on a national level and the research cooperation is necessary in order to be able to have access to this type of equipment on an European level. The HVS-machine can be used in evaluating new road concepts and maintenance strategies to decrease costs and environmental impact. As it is a shared European equipment also previous test results, obtained from public research projects, are available for researchers from different countries as reference (A).
