METHODS OF RADIO DETERMINATION FOR INMARSAT

The Maritime Safety Committee of the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) has established in 1972 a Panel of Experts (POE) on Maritime Satellites. Two pertinent studies, commissioned by the U. S. Maritime Administration (MarAd) are reported. The objectives of the first study were to develop methods of expanding INMARSAT, to include a radio determination capability in addition to the communication capability of the system recommended by the POE, to evaluate the performance of these methods, to compute their add-on cost, and to select preferred alternatives based on cost and performance. The objective of the second study was to evaluate in further detail the cost and performance of the preferred system configuration.
