NEW PHASED ARRAY ANTENNA INTENDED FOR MARITIME SATELLITE COMMUNICATION

During the period 1973-1977 Chalmers University of Technology, Gothernburg, represented Sweden in the COST Project 25/1 "Aerial network with phase control" . The participating countries were Finland, F.R. Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The objective of the project was to build a laboratory model of an L-band phased array intended for ships which want to communicate via satellite. Two geostationary MARISAT satellites covering the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are already relaying maritime communication, and the European Space Agency plans to launch a satellite MAROTS for ships in Indian and eastern Atlantic Oceans in the near future. The individual components are described and major parameters are discussed.
