Nickel containing alloys are finding increasing usage in marine applications, particularly in industries such as desalination and offshore oil and gas production where the properties can be used to provide greater reliability. As modern economic conditions place more and more emphasis on improved reliability and reduced maintenance, still greater usage of nickel-containing alloys is likely. This paper reviews the corrosion properties of some nickel containing alloys and their applications in the marine field. When testing the corrosion behavior of materials in seawater, it is necessry to recognize the complexity of this environment and wherever possible to test in natural seawater. Most of the data presented here were determined in natural seawater.
