SOIL RESTRAINT AGAINST HORIZONTAL MOTION OF PIPES

This discussion supplements the original paper in two respects: stressing the usage of continuous soil springs in the analysis of soil-structure interaction analyses; and supplementing correlations of the soil resistance to several other basic soil parameters other than the ultimate strength used by the authors. Buried piping systems that may involve many modes and members are discussed. Comments are made on Japanese studies that have investigated the soil-structure interaction behavior through observation of dynamic responses of underground structures, mostly tunnels.
