SOIL STRESS MEASUREMENT EXPERIENCES

Equipment and techniques that have been used for measuring soil pressures on underlying or retaining structures are described. Typical data are presented and considered that show a range of soil pressure transfer or concentration effects, depending on the design of special soil buffler zones or projecting conditions of the rigid structures. Equipment and techniques of measurement are also described for measurement of the principal soil stresses within an embankment mass. Principal soil stress data are presented and examined for two major earthfill dams, which show evidence of arching effects between the zones of different compressibility. /Author/
