RAPID DEVELOPMENT IN OCEAN TRANSPORT OF LNG AND LPG TO EUROPE

The increasing importance of liquefied gas imports into Europe is discussed. Data is presented for Western European LNG import projects; LNG transportation to Europe; forecast for the European LNG trade until 1990; western Europe LPG ocean traffic pattern in which vessels varying in size from 1,500 cubic meters up to 50,000 cubic meters are used; and current rates for these trips are also given. Also discussed is short haul traffic representing the exchange which can involve large annual amounts of transferred products, which generally take place inside the same zone utilizing a large fleet essentially formed by small or medium size coastal vessels. Long haul traffic represents product transfers by large parcels from producing areas outside Europe, which are performed by large vessels (12000 cubic meters to 50000 cubic meters).
