CAMMELL LAIRD MODERNISES ITS BIRKENHEAD YARD TO ENHANCE PRODUCTION FACILITIES

The main objective of the reconstruction was to provide factory-like conditions to permit increased production and fast accurate work to be consistently achieved throughout the whole ship construction process. The principal feature of the scheme is a construction hall where two ships can be constructed simultaneously under cover. In the hall's assembly area panels are joined to form units of up to 250 t which are then transferred on to the cover slipway where they are welded together to form the ship under construction. As the ship lengthens it is progressively jacked down the slipway so that subsequent sections can be added. Other features of the reconstruction include new steel stockyards from which plates and stiffeners pass to the steel by conveyor systems incorporating automatic shot blasting and painting plants.
