CONTAINER LESSORS--CONCERN OVER REFURBISHMENT CAPACITY

The sector of the container industry perhaps most frequently subject to criticism is that of leasing. The most frequent arguments surround quality of leasing company boxes, their condition on interchange and the leasing company approach to CSC responsibilities. The major lessors on the other hand feel that these criticisms are unjust and that correspondent with the general evolution of containerization, their own specification requirements and overall operational approach have advanced significantly in recent years. This article, based on a series of interviews with major lessors, outlines the leasing companies' current thinking and practice with regard to container purchasing, quality control, repair and refurbishment and their overall image in the field of cargo handling and transportation.
