Doha Development

This article discusses progress in the creation of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) in Qatar. The airport claims to be the first designed specifically to accommodate the Airbus A380. The focus of the airport is facilitating connecting traffic between the Indian sub-continent and Europe. The project must work around strict governing guidelines in order to avoid potential negative impacts on the surrounding environment. Also projected is land devoted to a free trade zone and three major road interchanges. The article notes plans to be ready for use by 2009, with runways almost complete and a hanger made to accommodate A380s already built. Finally, the article notes the project’s focus on cooperation between airport operators and airport users, as well as on a more unified approach towards an open skies environment in the Middle East.
