Although ro-ro is today very much an established transport mode, it is still a new science (some would say art form) and there are still many divergent opinions held about what constitutes a good ship and what constitutes a good terminal. Interior layouts of ro-ro vessels reflect considerably on the rate of cargo handling while a streamlined shore arrangement will also reap benefits by permitting speedier turnrounds. But in order to work smoothly the ship/shore interface must be bridged and it is precisely at this point where widely differing concepts have produced pitfalls galore for terminal and ship operators alike.
