A Data-Driven Waterway Simulation Model for Inland Waterway Operation

Tow sequencing, chamber assignment, tow variations, and two-way traffic are features of the large queuing system that a waterway network can be characterized as. In order to evaluate any particular operational and investment plan's overall performance by considering network interdependencies, a data-driven waterway simulation model is developed, since a fully sufficient analytical model for system complexity analysis does not exist. Analytical queuing theory is used to verify the proposed model, and available real world data is used to validate it. Dynamic traffic interaction demand, various lock operation control alternatives, and different network scenarios demonstrate model functionality and portability.
