UK COAL-PORTS FACE EXPORT CHALLENGE

As the largest coal producer in West Europe the UK coal industry has an annual output equal to the combined capacity of its European Economic Community partners. With a total annual production of 120 m tonnes increasing to some 150m tonnes by 1985 under the National Coal Board's (NCB) "Plan for Coal", the UK might anticipate a substantial energy surplus beyond 1980. Whether the industry can fulfill its export potential, however, depends upon the NCB reaching the right markets at the right price, and through adequate export facilities.
