U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection Joint Operations

Collaboration between United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and their respective predecessors has a long and successful history. In today's world, such collaboration is designed to secure the United States from smugglers and terrorists in, against, and through United States ports. Present-day CBP and USCG partnering in the Tampa Bay, Florida area is examined. A regional overview is presented; along with implications in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; the USCG/CBP exchange officer program; joint vessel targeting; joint at-sea boardings; joint dockside and dockside container operations; joint training. An overview of the future of USCG/CBP partnering is presented.
