REVIVED INTEREST IN HANDLING EQUIPMENT AS CARGO VOLUMES RISE

With scheduled and charter airlines alike recording major rises in cargo volumes this year, speedy and costly decisions are having to be made on investment in ground handling equipment. Much of the extra tonnage that is being carried is traveling underdeck or in the increasingly popular Combi aircraft, but there is also a significant rise in the use of main deck cargo space on 747Fs, which cannot be serviced with existing equipment at many aircargo terminals. The article reviews some of the problems and cargo trade patterns, and provides a guide to manufacturers and available handling systems.
