Road safety education: challenges and choices

This paper highlights strategies undertaken by School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) that aim to increase implementation of road safety education programs in Western Australian schools. A literature review on effective road safety education, and consultation with Western Australian education systems and sectors, health and road safety stakeholders, guided the development of a series of resources titled Challenges and Choices. These resources target 4 to 15 year-old students and their parents/caregivers. Factors impacting on schools implementing road safety were identified by focus groups. This paper provides a working example of how research findings have been formulated into strategic action through the development of road safety education programs for children and young people in Western Australian schools and will demonstrate a range of strategies that have been implemented within the resource.
