Progress report on the development of the Western Australian road safety strategy 2008-2020

The Office of Road Safety, on behalf of the Road Safety Council, is currently developing the next road safety strategy for Western Australia to ensure that road safety policies continue to evolve within a strategic framework. The new strategy will be based on the Safe System philosophy, which aims to improve road safety by putting safe road users into safe vehicles, travelling at safe speeds along safe roads and roadsides. It is critical that the next road safety strategy for Western Australia be developed in a consultative and transparent way to maximise stakeholder and community engagement and therefore facilitate implementation. As such, the process for the development of the strategy for 2008 2020 involves a greater degree of community and stakeholder engagement than has been the case previously, based on the fundamental belief that the community should be provided with the best evidence about what works no matter how controversial, so that it can debate and consider the options available to improve safety. It is equally important to have a strategy based on the best possible evidence. This paper outlines the modelling technique used by Monash University. Accident Research Centre (MUARC) along with preliminary results and summarises the community consultation process. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
